Haemorrhoids are vascular structures in the anal canal that become piles when swollen or inflamed.

Haemorrhoids are very common and can affect almost anyone. They are treated with rubber banding and this is usually done in conjunction with the colonoscopy while the patient is under sedation.

The diagram demonstrates the anal anatomy of both internal and external haemorrhoids.
